A shadow market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Experimental Treatment Acquiring Traction Online
Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being promoted by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning properties. Viewers are encouraged to contact these accounts privately for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.
Thriving Commerce on Social Networks
Separately, a flourishing market exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of members share comparison images, administration instructions and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Sellers promote the substance there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for purchases.
Understanding Retatrutide
This medication is an experimental injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials suggest it could assist patients reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Referred to as the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Express Worries
However, physicians and pharmacists have cautions that the distribution of what remains an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to users administering products of unknown origin.
Several professionals stated the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the rising cost of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Implementation
Selling the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved drug that cannot be promoted or supplied for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some influencers attempt to sidestep the rules by calling to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but advertising and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and customer regulations, potentially leading to penalties, legal action or imprisonment.
Platform Response and Content Removal
Based on the social media company, the platform has removed violative content and banned associated hashtags and search suggestions. The organization stated it was dedicated to maintaining the platform secure and investing in enhancing compliance measures.
Online Marketplace Activities
Research also found groups with up to nine thousand participants selling retatrutide using the platform's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Typing “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of users, populated with images of slimming results, glowing testimonials and detailed instructions for preparing or administering at home.
Within minutes of joining one community, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases take place. The vendor sent an guidebook and guaranteed delivery within 48 hours. When questioned whether the substance was genuine, one vendor responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. Not one asked about body mass, health issues or previous experience.
Product Details and Costs
Within these communities, messages show black plastic parcels with postal service labels, claiming to include fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens typically sold at £160 for 20mg. When asked how much time a injector should last, vendors give conflicting answers varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Oversight and Safety Actions
A representative for the messaging service stated it actively moderated dangerous material on its platform including content that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind retatrutide is sound, these digital versions may not contain what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of an online medical service linked the surge in interest to recent price rises for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices rising, individuals are turning to online platforms. But counterfeit injections are extremely dangerous. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she said.
Her team has already seen individuals harmed by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your health,” said the doctor. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Statement
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in third stage research studies and had not been reviewed or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any product “falsely representing itself as a company investigational product not yet authorized … may expose users to potentially significant medical dangers”.
