Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using these medications must be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to starting weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
